Cell Phones – Dirty Dogs!

urlWe take germs everywhere we take our dogs and our cell phones.

We take germs everywhere we take our dogs and our cell phones. People set their cell phones on public bathroom sinks, on mats at the gym and drop them on floors and hand them to friends to show off photos.

When you combine your dog and your cellphone’s proximity to your ears, nose and mouth with all that bacteria-loving warmth, the result can be harmful to your health.

Bacteria and other infectious agents on dog’s and our phones can cause flu, pinkeye or diarrhea and worse.

Even though computers, keys, pens and landline phones can harbor germs, many people’s cellphones have become appendages—never far from the pillow where many of our dogs sleep.

“We’re feeding the little creatures,” says Michael Schmidt, a professor and vice chairman of microbiology and immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina. “We’ve all seen that greasy wet smear and where there is smear, there are bugs.”

A lab tested randomly selected phones. The phones showed no signs of E. coli or staphylococci bacteria, unlike many of our dogs. But all phones showed abnormally high numbers of coliforms, a bacteria indicating fecal contamination. Of the phones tested there were between about 2,700 and 4,200 units of coliform bacteria. In drinking water, the limit is less than 1 unit per 100 ml of water and it only takes ten salmonella bacteria for you to get infected. People are just as likely to get sick from their phones as from handles of the bathroom or their dog.
